Among the most EXTRAORDINARY Venetian masks, the moretta certainly excels. It was a typically feminine mask that also appears in many paintings by Pietro Longhi. During the Carnival the Venetians allowed themselves transgressions of all kinds and the mask served to maintain anonymity and allow any prohibited game. It was an oval mask of black velvet that covered the woman's face following her features, but with one particularity: it had no mouth. She was supported by holding a small wooden button between her teeth, thus preventing the lady from uttering a word.
Size 50x70cm or 30x40 cm.
